District Curriculum Specialist Receives PC READS Literacy Award

PC READS was pleased to honor Julie Hastings, PCSD Elementary Curriculum Specialist, with our 2019 Elevating Literacy Award on Friday night.

Park City School District Leader Honored for Implementing Reading Initiatives

On May 3rd, PC READS awarded Julie Hastings with our 2019 Elevating Literacy Award. This award was started as a way to recognize someone who has embraced the PC READS mission and is making a difference in our community. It honors an individual who has made a significant contribution towards improving the lives of students with reading disabilities, including dyslexia.

Intervention Program Helps McPolin Elementary School Readers Learn

PC READS is very thankful for the PCSD Interventionists who started this program at McPolin Elementary School! And, we are proud to be supporting educators through our Professional Development Grant Program. #elevatingliteracy

Interventionist Amy Warren, featured in this article, received a PC READS grant for Wilson Level 2 Coaching Sessions and shared the following: “I am so thankful for PC READS because they help to make education accessible at every level. PC READS supports teachers by giving them opportunities for trainings and professional development and, in turn, teachers are able to use that information and experience to better serve and support their students.”

Park City School District Updates Literacy Plan in Response to State Legislature

“In an assessment from the Park City Education Foundation, 90 percent of teachers said Fundations has worked in their classroom. Teachers also reported having more confidence in identifying struggling readers and helping readers of all abilities reach their goals.”

Wilson Fundations author to speak about new reading program

PC READS and The Hall Family Foundation are hosting Barbara Wilson in Park City! While here, she will meet with teachers, parents and provide a community presentation on “Navigating Reading Success.”

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE: One in five students has a language-based learning disability, and the most common, by far, is dyslexia, Aten said. Those who attend the event will learn about the reading program teachers in Park City schools have adopted, which helps all students learn to read with multi-sensory methods, especially those suffering with dyslexia. The plan is to eventually include all third-graders as well – it is currently being taught to third-graders at McPolin – and to feature a structured support system for dyslexic students who need extra assistance.

Reading Program Expands to Park City Elementary Schools

PC READS is proud to be collaborating with the Park City School District, the Park City Education Foundation and The Hall Family Fund on a Dyslexia Initiative which includes implementing Wilson Fundations in our elementary schools. What a wonderful example of a public/private partnership to benefit our students!

“Reading is an essential life skill that is not always easy to learn. The Park City School District recognized that, and with help from the local nonprofit PC READS and donors, it began a new reading program for teachers to help all students learning to read.”

PCEF Fundations® Implementation Evaluation

This link will open up the assessment report that was completed by the Park City Education Foundation (PCEF) and shared at the PCSD Board Meeting on May 16th. Wilson Fundations was piloted at McPolin Elementary School as part of the Dyslexia Initiative during the 2016-2017 school year. The pilot was very successful and the district will be rolling Wilson Fundations out to all elementary schools in Fall 2017.  The Dyslexia Initiative also sent 5 PCSD educators to IMSE Orton-Gillingham training and including Dyslexia Awareness Presentations by PC READS to elementary school staff. Those presentations occurred at McPolin and Trailside and are being planned at Jeremy Ranch and Parleys for this coming year.

Review faults Park City School District special education program: Report states disconnect exists between parents, district

“An independent review of the Park City School District’s special education services found glaring deficiencies in how the district operates the program.

The review was conducted over the course of a week in the fall by 12 staff members of the Utah State Board of Education Special Education Section who studied the district by interviewing parents, teachers and administrators; holding focus groups; and observing classrooms. The group last week delivered a report on its findings to the Park City Board of Education, which commissioned the review in the summer, after a series of criticisms were levied against the special education program.”

Pilot program at McPolin aims to identify dyslexic students

Exciting news in Park City, UT during Dyslexia Awareness Month! Read about the Dyslexia Initiative pilot program which is bringing Wilson Fundations to one school and Comprehensive Orton-Gillingham to 5 educators. PC READS was instrumental to this project’s development and is very proud to be collaborating with the Park City School District, the Park City Education Foundation and the Ty & Karen Hall Foundation on this important work.
