IEP Case Argued Before Supreme Court
How much of a benefit do schools have to provide kids with IEPs? That’s the question at the heart of the Endrew F. vs. Douglas County School District case, which was argued today in front of the Supreme Court. We’re coming to you now from Washington, DC, discussing this important case and what it might mean for your child with an IEP.
Supreme Court to decide: What level of education do public schools legally owe to students with disabilities?
The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on a very important case today. “Advocates say it is the most important special-education case in decades.”
U.S. Department of Education Releases Guidance on Civil Rights of Students with Disabilities
On December 28, 2016, the US Department of Education issued guidance on civil rights of students with disabilities. This includes a “Parent and Educator Resource Guide to Section 504 in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools.” This is a great resource to print and keep!
Page 5: “For example, a student who has dyslexia and is substantially limited in reading finds it challenging to read the required class material in a timely manner. … the student spends far more time preparing for class than other students and earns good grades because of the student’s intelligence and extreme efforts. The student would still be substantially limited in the major life activity of reading despite earning good grades and may require a multi-sensory approach to learning, and additional time to complete in-class tests or quizzes, even if that student earns mostly A’s.”

New reading approach is a game changer for Atlanta school
One Atlanta elementary school has decided that ALL teachers should implement the Orton-Gillingham approach:
“The brilliance of the approach is that it’s not a curriculum. It’s knowledge. The teachers hold that knowledge and use it,” said REAP founder Jen Rhett. “It makes all readers stronger, not just those who are struggling.”

IDA Urges ILA to Review and Clarify Key Points in Dyslexia Research Advisory
Earlier this year, the ILA (International Literacy Association) published a “Research Advisory” on Dyslexia. It was immediately controversial among experts, educators and parents. Below is the well-written response by the IDA (International Dyslexia Association).
EXCERPT: Our purpose is not to criticize the work of ILA and other organizations with missions similar to ours, but instead to encourage frank discussion that will lead to the best solutions for the very serious challenges we face in education today. ILA has highlighted important concepts related to dyslexia in its Dyslexia Research Advisory; however, IDA has a responsibility to clarify the implications of the research cited for the parents, professionals, advocates, and legislators who rely on IDA for guidance in applying research to practice.

President Signs Smith Dyslexia Bill Into Law
Press Release out of Washington, D.C. – The president today signed into law the bipartisan Research Excellence and Advancements for Dyslexia Act (READ Act) (H.R. 3033). The READ Act, introduced by Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas), supports important research to further our understanding of dyslexia, including better methods for early detection and teacher training.
